Url Trends by UrlTrends.com

UrlTrends.com is a site that shows an url's trend in alexa rank, PageRank, Google/Yahoo/MSN backlinks, archive.org archived pages and according to alexa they are growing really fast in popularity. Its been ranked as the 7th top mover. So I decided to visit the site and see what exactly got them moving so fast.

The moment I saw the trend report of a particular url using their site I was so impressed that I created a free account with them. Unlike sites that provide link popularity in one line(or sometimes one word) that dont help webmasters much, these guys show a trend report that is more informative.

They also tell webmasters how much the end user loves their pages by displaying the number of bookmarks for their URL in furl and del.icio.us. Aint that cool.

Well dont have a lot of time to write a detailed review. But can tell you this much, its a cool service and definitely worth a look.

Google algo has always been a mystery just why it ranks a webpage for a keyword is something I will never find out. For the last few days I have been getting visitors to this page for the keyword "Reduce Paunch". Weirdly excluding this post the word appears only once in my 57 blog posts put together.

Anyways if you are one of those who came looking for "Reduce Paunch" I dont want to upset you. Here are 3 good links

No CAT for me!!!

I know I can't bell the CAT this time. Considering the fact that I haven't yet started my preparations and there are 1000's of others out there who are working their a## off I really don't stand a chance.

But still I would have loved to try. Also I am in no hurry to get into the IIMs.I wanted to write CAT this year to prepare myself for CAT 2007(or may be CAT 2008).Unfortunately before I could make up my mind as to whether or not I want to try for CAT this year and whether or not CAT preparations will affect my work and viceversa, the last date for purchase of CAT app forms is over."Procrastination is the thief of time"

Well that sure means no CAT for me this year :sob: :sob: :sob: Best of luck to the other aspirants who did buy the app forms. And thanks to my pals who provided me with cash to buy the app form(I am a little cash strapped this month),gave me their vehicle to go to the bank and forgot to tell me that the last date for purchase was over.

P.S :- Looks like I have proved to the world one more time that humanity cannot get dumber than me.

Milestone -- Is It ???

Today , I completed two years at my company.Well technically yesterday, for it is 2 am in the morning now.Although everyone keeps telling me that 2 years is a trivial part of once career and not really a big deal, kinda thing.I feel otherwise and I have my reasons.

I do act dumb at times but i aint totally dumb. I have the fire in my belly and when I dedicate myself to some task,I am like a train engine that runs really fast in that direction as long as it has the track it wants or slows down terribly may be even derails(I can only work at two extremes). In the two years I have completed at my company I have slowed down only twice and never derailed. Something that has kept me running this fast definitely has played a big role in my life.

Kindergartens are just two years of ones schooling, but they do play a big role in shaping ones schooling and education as such. My two years has helped me to some extent in finding the answer for that one all important question, the answer to which seperates me from eternal fame --- "What is it that I really want it life?".For one thing I know I dont want to be an electrical engineer, but still there is more to find out.May be when I get the full answer these 2 years will mean a lot more than what they do now.

So much has happened within these 731 days that they have become indelible memories in my mind and can't be considered trivial. Thus these 2 years are a big deal irrespective of what people say.

In all it has been a rollercoaster ride, cliche I agree but thats the truth.Times of high adrenalin and times when you are almost sure you will fall ;-) . I have I guess learnt(or atleast made a list of) certain things by virtue of experience in the last 2 yrs.

I have ofcourse learnt a lot of technical stuff like Java and all but that aint important, you can stay home and still learn all that. The things that I really learnt and that do matter a lot are -

i)Whatever be the field in which you master there is always somebody out there who can humble you? - so learn humility
ii)These people who can humble you miss out going high places cos they cant communicate their ideas - so learn communication
iii)The happiest and the best performing folks are those that generally want nothing or want things that are easily achievable. - so want nothing when you take up a task.
iv)These people who want nothing are boring and not your kind. - So continue with your life motto "Low aim is a crime" once you are done with the task.
v)Those who focus go the extra mile with least strain - So learn to focus stop thinking too much.
vi)There is an element of luck in everything everywhere - So learn to accept it and not crib about it.
vii)Cos of the element of luck, some people tend to get luckier than you.But current exploits aren't indications of future successes - So dont compare and lose heart.
viii)Cliche but working smart is important. There are those who spend 13 hrs at office , but those who really progress are those that spend atleast 6 hrs a day working - so learn time management.
ix)Google invades into people's privacy and hence anybody on earth can access this blog - so don't blog everything your heart thinks, use your brain.

Anyways rants and learnings apart its been a decent two years and now I am into the third year. Hope this one is better than the other two and contains good challenges, lots of happiness, great achievements and ofcourse me working with utmost concentration and dedication at the best of my health and spirits.

Kalpana Chawla - Unnecessary Hype

Recently I had vowed not to hurt anyones sentiments through my blog but this topic is too tempting.Everytime I read about Kalpana Chawla or the satellite that carries her name strangely I get furious...The recent act by one of our ministers in which he dedicated a new scheme to her forced me into writing this post.

Disclaimer:- I have nothing against Kalpana as such, she is indeed a big achiever and it takes a lot to reach where she did. I have ensured not to talk ill of her anywhere in this post but if you do find any instances pls let me know and I will strip them immediately.I am upset only with the hype.

My Reasons

Kalpana what she is portayed to be?

1) An Indian Space Heroine

2) An inspiration for all Indian Women

3) A significant contributer to Indian Civilization

4) A good great Indian who has made India proud.

What India had done to acknowledge the above 4 points?

1) Gave a Satellite her name

2) Lessons in school syllabi based on her

3) Schemes and policies in her name

4) Lot of bloated hype

What she actually is?

1) A naturalized American

2) Someone who ditched India for greener pastures in 1982 and was just another NRI for the next 20 odd years.I dont say going abroad is wrong, but somehow who went abroad, stayed there , became a citizen, dint contribute much to their country during those 20 years of absence really did ditch their motherland

3) Just another astronaut who died in a failed space ship landing

4) An absolutely insignificant contributor to India's glory , pride or Civilization

5) An inspiration to few, but come one any famous person especially NRI can become an inspiration eg: Swaraj Paul,Lakshmi Mittal,Padma Lakshmi

Then why this hype?

1) Cos she is dead and somehow this world likes praising people posthumously.

2) Sympathy

3) She was born in India and is a Woman(gimme a break, had it been a man he definitely wouldn't have a satellite in his name)

4) Politics and Politicians - they like hyping things up to get recognition.

What would have been ideal?

1) 1 day national mourning

2) A photograph of hers at ISRO(I am pretty sure thats already there)

Some more pointers:-

1) There is no satellite named after India's first astronaut in space - Rakesh Sharma

2) I dont think tamilnadu state board school sylabii has a lesson on "Lala Lajpat rai" or "Dr.Radhakrishnan"

3) All this hype wouldn't happen had she died of heart attack or even a car crash

4) And she dint even say anything patriotic about India during her space voyage.Atleast Rakesh sharma said "Sare jahan se acha".This is all that I guess she quoted

5) Most important of them all she is NOT Indian, she is India born American.

Going to try my chance at MODELLING!!!

ya u read that right and I can hear u laughing. Anyways I dunno if I am a model material but what harm in trying.

So here is the tentative plan to attack the modelling world.

July 2005 :- Start Growing Long Hair
Aug 2005 :- 3 kms a day on threadmill to reduce paunch
Sep 2005 :- Learn shoulder exercises from Rhaaj
Oct 2005 :- Thread mill, shoulder exercises and little more work out
Nov 2005 :- -ditto-
Dec 2005 :- Get a professional portfolio done.

FAQs:-
1) Why delay the good work till december?

cos it costs Rs.15000 to prepare a professional portfolio and I dont have that much.

2) Why modelling?

Chumma sudden interest.

3) Have u seen the mirror?

Oh Thanks!!! I have and I realize what u are talking abt , i am growing smarter day by day.

Ok now wish me luck.

Shaivaism, pradhorsham and possible change of fortune

I am, I believe an ardent devotee of lord shiva. But I have always believed that nothing good can happen to me on any pradhorsham(an auspicious day dedicated to lord shiva that comes twice a month).

Things changed when I got the call for test, attended the test, got called for interview, attended the interview and joined my company on pradhorshams. They were 5 continuous pradhorshams on which good things happened to me,so I concluded that pradhorshams weren't as bad as I thot.

Why am I blogging abt this suddenly?Well actually I forgot that today is a pradhorshams(I rarely forget pradhorshams, myself and my colleague Saravana Balaji visit the nearby shiva temple every pradhorsham) when it suddenly struck me now I realized what a wonderful day today has been.

Truly the lord is one's shepherd.

Yet again a really wonderful post by Seth Godin. He never ceases to inspire me with his marketing sugesstions. In this post he talks about what marketing folk must concentrate on (wants of the customer) but what they instead spend too much time and effort satisfying (the need)

I really doubt if Bjarne Stroustrup the designer and creator of C++ would say something like this

Google Blog: Fill in the blanks

In this Google Blog Hiyan Alshawi, Research Scientist at Google talks about using wildcard characters for search. I was thrilled when I read about this feature in his blog, but was pretty upset when I tried out the same myself. Seems its another beta feature from Google.

To explain my point a search on "Chennai is the * capital of India" returns more details about bangalore than chennai.

What am I passionate about?

When I develop a liking for something, it slowly turns into an obsession. So it was with one project at office and so it is with watching movies. But a discussions today made me think what are the things that I am passionate about that can help me earn my bread. (I am no more in the project and I am not trying my luck in the movies till I get a call from hollywood). So the things as I found them.

1) Search Engine Optimization/Marketing

It was love at first sight, then there was a brief break and then I am in love again.Somehow this field excites me a lot. I infact finished a SEO book of 300 pages in a day. I read Robin Cook lot slower than that.I also believe I know quite a good deal about the field, infact an italian seo consultancy wanted to hire me based my postings at some forums when they realized that I wasn't a freelancer they were very dejected.

2) Web traffic analysis

I know absolutely nothing about this field but it has fascinated me a lot and I have tried my hand at it with statcounter for this blog. For example I know what ips people come to this blog from, I know they come searching for "Badrinath Blogspot" on Google or "Badrinath.V.S" on Technorati etc.

3) Product Designing

Again a big part of this is in the dark to me but I love the intial thrill that there is when u understand market requirement,do a product ui and stuff like that.

4) Blogging

Who doesn't want to be famous? Blogs are the easiest medium and I like them for that. Also they are a great place for you to try various writing styles.

5) Article Writing

I am trying my hand at this one, also I have written some before and I guess I like writing stuff thats informative and has some humour in it.

6) Motivating a Team

Someone once told me "I am sure your going to the team will lighten up the team" and my PL once told me that I am a "Team Person". I have kinda always loved listening to people's troubles (even in personal life), making them fell happy and cheerful, telling them stuff that will pump them up etc. I love finding out what most members of a team think, why they think so, what needs to be done to correc their thinking etc. Most people who dont know me well tend to think random thots abt me, but people who know me well always like me.

7) And Ofcourse Coding

Although I really cant call myself a programmer, that is what I started out to be and Java is still my first love. I am pathetic at programming but hey I am passionate and want to learn, also I have written some working code and must say it is doing pretty well.

So you think I have a chance to earn my bread with the above said 7 passions? ;-)

Oh my god my English!!!

My english has gotten screwed up big time. I was never excellent at english but these days I stammer a lot while speaking and grope for the right words while writing. Personally it was getting really insulting. So dusted out "Norman Lewis - Word Power Made Easy" from the attic in a desperate attempt to better my English. Wish me luck.
